The Home Depot Launches Nationwide Express Delivery
The Home Depot has announced the nationwide rollout of its Express Delivery program, bringing rapid fulfillment to customers for a small flat fee in U.S. markets, without the need for a subscription or membership. Customers can get essential items in three hours or less, including materials and supplies for pro construction projects. Shoppers can view Express Delivery eligibility on Home Depot product pages and in the cart at checkout. The service uses Home Depot’s supply chain network alongside more than 2,000 U.S. stores as fulfillment hubs. Pro and DIY customers can use the delivery service for a $7 flat fee in most major markets.
Total Retail's Take: For many retailers, faster delivery is primarily about convenience. For Home Depot (and others in the home improvement category), it can be about keeping a project moving. For a pro or DIYer in the middle of a job and in need of a part, having to stop working and drive to a store to get the needed item can derail a project. Express Delivery can now bring that product/part directly to the job site, removing friction for the customer. The service can save customers' time and boost their productivity. And for pro customers in particular, time is money in the form of labor.
In an era when Amazon.com has trained consumers to expect fast delivery, The Home Depot is able to tap into its massive store network to fulfill orders quickly and efficiently from virtually every major U.S. population center. The home improvement retailer can leverage its physical store fleet into an omnichannel logistics advantage. This announcement represents the latest step in Home Depot's evolution from a home improvement retailer into a retail, distribution and logistics platform.
