Eddie Bauer Suffers Data Breach
Eddie Bauer said yesterday that its point-of-sale systems at retail stores were affected by malware, enabling unauthorized parties to access customers’ payment card information used at any of its 350 stores in the U.S. and Canada on various dates between Jan. 2, 2016 and July 17, 2016. Eddie Bauer is currently in the process of notifying customers whose payment card information may have been taken.
Total Retail’s Take: Another day, another malware breach. The Eddie Bauer news comes just a few days after hotel operator HEI said 20 of its hotels had been infected by a similar breach. And who can forget the serious implications faced by Target, Michaels and Neiman Marcus after their data breaches. Cleaning up the mess can cause serious derailments for retailers, shifting their focuses from selling merchandise to strengthening security and launching a public relations blitz. It’s probably time for all retailers to take a closer look at these types of crimes and find ways to prevent them before another one strikes.
