Omaha, Neb. -- Midwestern discount department store retailer Gordman’s Stores said Friday that profit for the quarter ended April 28 rose 10.6% to $8.1 million, compared with $7.3 million in the year-ago period. Sales rose 13.8% to $133.9 million, from $117.7 million. Same-store sales climbed 4.7%. “We are pleased with our overall performance and remain confident in our ability to realize our sales and profit guidance for fiscal 2012," said Jeff Gordman, president and CEO. The retailer opened four stores and entered three new markets – Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah, and Boise, Idaho – during the quarter.

Sierra Trading Post, a closeouts direct marketer based in Wyoming, announces a new director of retail operations, Brent Layton. Under Layton's direction, the company plans to open several retail outlet stores in the U.S. "Although we are a Top 100 Internet retailer, we recognize that 90 percent of consumer sales in the U.S. are handled by brick-and-mortar stores," said Gary Imig, president of Sierra Trading Post. "To build a community of brand enthusiasts and to gain new shoppers and retain existing customers, we plan to expand our retail presence, and Brent Layton is an important component of that plan."

Columbus, Ohio -- DSW said Thursday that it opened two new stores on Sept. 28. A new store opened at Vintage Oaks Shopping Center in Novato, Calif., and a new store opened the same day in Boise, Idaho, at Franklin Towne Plaza.

Amazon.com has launched a local deals site in New York in its latest effort to compete with Groupon. Amazon, which launched its AmazonLocal service in Boise, Idaho, said the deals services are now available in 30 locations.
