Macy's will close five Macy's and four Bloomingdale's stores that are underperforming. More than 830 workers will be affected by the closings — 375 at Macy's stores and 463 at Bloomingdale's. But many could have the option of taking jobs at new stores the company plans to open.

Following the openings of New York-based Stuart Weitzman Inc.'s 1,600-sq.-ft. flagship at 675 Fifth Ave. in New York, as well as an 1,800-sq.-ft. flagship boutique at 701 N. U.K.-based apparel brand Superdry plans to open three new stores in the coming months, according to www.wwd.com. New stores are slated to open in Santa Clara, Calif., at the Valley Fair mall in late May 2011, and at the South Street Seaport in New York's lower Manhattan neighborhood in June 2011, as well as a store in the Mall of America, in Bloomington, Minn., in July 2011. The company, which hopes to open 10 to 12 stores a year over the next four years, would like to open additional stores in the Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and Miami markets.
