lululemon CEO Heidi O'Neill Overhauls Leadership Team
lululemon CEO Heidi O'Neill is marking her first month on the job with a slew of leadership changes she says will make the business even more competitive. The Vancouver-based apparel company has appointed ex-Athleta chief executive and president Maggie Gauger as lululemon’s president and chief product officer. Former Walmart Canada executive Joseph Godsey is becoming chief operating officer. In addition, lululemon is searching for candidates to fill the chief brand and chief technology officer roles as well as someone to become its next chief communications officer.
CFO Meghan Frank, who ran lululemon while the brand waited for O’Neill to take on the top job, will remain in her current role but also fulfil some of the duties of a chief brand and chief technology officer. The company says Nikki Neuburger, chief brand and product activation officer, and Ted Dagnese, chief supply chain officer, will leave lululemon on Nov. 6 to pursue other opportunities.
Total Retail's Take: This shuffling of the leadership team signals that O’Neill sees lululemon’s problems as more than a temporary sales slowdown. She is attempting to rebuild the business around product innovation, brand relevance and faster execution. The appointment of former Athleta CEO and longtime Nike executive Maggie Gauger as president and chief product officer is an acknowledgement that insufficient product innovation has hurt the business, costing it market share against rising competitors such as Alo Yoga, Vuori and others. New COO Joseph Godsey’s experience at Walmart, Sam’s Club and Adidas suggests a greater emphasis on speed-to-market, supply chain efficiency and connecting product decisions more closely with operations.
Going forward, expect lululemon to prioritize fewer organizational silos, faster product development and a more distinctive brand identity rather than simply relying on store expansion or the strength of its existing franchise. This a broader transformation under O'Neill's oversight, but there is a foundation in place for future success, including a loyal customer base and international growth opportunity.
