Religion-Themed Catalogs Lead the Way
Religious catalogs had the highest growth rate of any category in total number of catalogs over the past five years, jumping from 205 to 329 (60.5 percent growth). That’s one of the findings included in the 2008 edition of “The National Directory of Catalogs,” which features information on 12,230 catalogs. Other figures from this year’s edition follow.
* Categories that grew substantially in the number of catalogs over the past five years included automotive, which increased from 389 to 593 (52.4 percent), and education, which climbed from 400 to 528 (32 percent);
* books had the most listings of any category with 1,156 catalogs, up from 1,071 in 2004, followed by apparel with 819 catalogs, up from 711;
* rounding out the rest of top 10 categories were automotive (593 catalogs), education (528), gardening (422), gifts (358), food (332), religion (329), home (317) and sports (312); and
* categories showing the greatest decline over the past five years are manufacturing catalogs (down 48 percent), computer catalogs (-27.5 percent), craft catalogs (-23.8 percent) and office catalogs (-13.2 percent).
