L2, a New York University think tank that specializes in retail economics, has released their first-ever ranking of department stores based on digital prowess, and here's a shocker: Macy's has beat out pace-setting digital darling Net-a-Porter. Macy's comes in second on this list, topped only by Nordstrom, while Net-a-Porter is way down the ladder at seventh. Saks, UK-based Marks & Spencer, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale's also rank ahead of of the luxury e-tailer. So, er, how is that possible?

Only two retailers — Office Depot and Staples — made it into the top 10 U.S. companies on the 2012 Newsweek Green Rankings, while Marks & Spencer is the sole retailer to make it onto the top 10 global list. For the fourth year in a row, Newsweek's Green Rankings assessed the environmental performance of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States and around the world, comparing their environmental footprint, corporate management and transparency. To conduct the study, Newsweek partnered with two leading environmental research organizations — Trucost and Sustainalytics.

Marks & Spencer's Director of Multichannel Development David Walmsley took the stage at Shop.org to talk about the company's multichannel retail strategies. Marks & Spencer is a food, home and fashion retailer headquartered in London that currently ships goods to eighty-three countries globally. Their biggest challenge is to create an all-encompassing global identity that responds to local needs and demographics. This required close coordination between stores and ecommerce teams to build out their multichannel strategy in a manner that creates a virtuous circle between all customer touch points.
