An interactive supply chain hammers out all the uncertainty in your organization. For example, in a distribution center, automation can be used to improve the following:
- Inventory accuracy: You eliminate the problem of flying blind, not knowing if you have too much inventory or not enough.
- Inventory location: Not knowing where your inventory is causes inefficiency, lost time for pickers and slow loading.
- Space utilization: You should be optimizing storage systems, racking and pallet patterns to make the best use of labor and space. High-selling inventory, for example, should be at the front.
- Redundant operations: Automated systems (e.g., barcode scanners) can help eliminate the wasted effort of multiple touches to move a product from point A to point B.
- Optimized picking: Automation can make picking more efficient through system-directed pick/putaway and automated routing, saving time for workers and wear and tear on equipment.
And that's only one facet of the supply chain. With visibility throughout, the whole process becomes very fluid, from the point of embarkation to the point of debarkation.
