In episode 507 of Total Retail Talks, Editor-in-Chief Joe Keenan interviews Charlie Beer, chief operating officer at Naturepedic, the leading certified organic mattress and bedding company. Naturepedic was started over 20 years ago when the founder rejected conventional crib mattresses containing industrial foam and chemicals, leading to better products like organic cotton (0:55). Since then, it has expanded into kids, luxury adult mattresses, bedroom furniture, bedding, and accessories. Beer, part of the early team, returned to Naturepedic after gaining finance, systems, and scaling experience as the company grew beyond its original Ohio facility into multiple buildings and secured investment (3:30). He says scaling will preserve hand-finished craftsmanship by ensuring compliant materials and tools (4:30).
Today, Naturepedic has 18 corporate stores with plans to add eight to 10 more in target markets including Southern California, Miami, Naples, St. Louis, Detroit, and Philadelphia. Beer emphasizes that stores are central for advocacy building and for fitting customizable mattresses (7:35). With wholesale projected to grow 50 percent of Naturepedic's business, Beer shares how the company supports partners through reliable delivery, consistent experience, and strong service (10:15). Furthermore, he details the company's efforts to modernize systems and operations (13:30). As demand for wellness grows, Beer says Naturepedic benefits from its 23-year history, consistent mission and strong consumer trust (17:40).
Charlie Beer has been part of Naturepedic’s journey since 2007, joining when the company had fewer than 20 employees. Starting in customer service, he quickly took on roles across sales, logistics, product development, operations, and marketing, helping build the business from the ground up alongside its founders. This early, hands-on experience gave him a deep understanding of both the product and the company’s mission. In 2019, Charlie left to expand his expertise, working in business development at a biomanufacturing technology company focused on ESG and sustainability. He later led IT, systems, and analytics in an ERP role, strengthening his operational and technical skillset. Charlie holds a degree in chemistry and is a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), bringing a unique perspective on health, ergonomics, and the chemical risks of conventional bedding. Now back at Naturepedic, he combines that expertise with a deep appreciation for the brand’s handcrafted, wellness-driven roots.
