Richard Cabela, co-founder of the Cabela's retail chain that caters to outdoor enthusiasts and a prominent supporter of the National Rifle Association, has died. He was 77. Cabela started the company in 1961 as a catalog business with his wife, Mary, at their kitchen table in Chappell, Neb. His brother, James Cabela, soon joined the company and together they developed large stores in the U.S. and Canada featuring elaborate taxidermy displays of animals. Through its stores and eventually the internet, Cabela's became one of the nation's major gun retailers.

Think about it: A century ago, shopkeepers and customers actually knew each other by name since their visits were frequent. Loyalty wasn’t a function of points, deals or discounts, but of service. Relationships were built on trust. Merchants knew their customers’ likes and dislikes and strived to deliver on those preferences. Putting purchases “on account” was done in part because some payments were done via barter and some were handled by the “man of the house,” who settled the account at a later time.

In the latest case of cheap does chic, New York fashion label Proenza Schouler has accused discount retailer Target of copying one of its sought after bag designs. Priced at a mere $34.99, Target’s Mossimo messenger bag bares a strikingly similar resemblance to the Proenza Schouler PS1 satchel which sells for $1,995, and is carried by Kate Beckinsale, Mary-kate Olsen and Nicky Hilton.
