Struggling big-box retailer Best Buy yesterday released a list of 42 store closures. Richfield, Minn.-based Best Buy announced a round of 50 store closures in late March, but at that time didn't identify the stores that would close. Since then, it's closed two stores (one in Kansas City, Mo. and one in Scottsdale, Ariz.) and has notified five Twin Cities stores and one San Antonio store that they'll close later this year.
Following the openings of New York-based Stuart Weitzman Inc.'s 1,600-sq.-ft. flagship at 675 Fifth Ave. in New York, as well as an 1,800-sq.-ft. flagship boutique at 701 N. Michigan Ave. in Chicago—which both debuted in October 2011 and were designed by Italian avant-garde architect Fabio Novembre—the luxury shoe retailer is planning to expand, according to www.wwd.com. In December 2011, shops will open in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Bloomington, Minn. (at the Mall of America); and Tampa, Fla. Additionally, new store openings are slated in 2012 for New Orleans; Hackensack and Short Hills, N.J.; Palo Alto, Calif.; Los Angeles; Chestnut Hill, Mass;
Long Island City, N.Y.-based CALYPSO St. Barth Inc., a division of Solera Capital LLC, plans to double its current store base of 27 units, with six new stores slated to open in 2011, according to www.wwd.com. A 2,400-sq.-ft. unit at 900 Madison Ave., between 72nd and 73rd streets, is scheduled to open in July 2011. A Calypso Home store launched April 28 in Dallas at the Plaza at Preston Center, and another unit will open at the Scottsdale Quarter in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 12. “When we bought Calypso, the footprint was heavy in the Northeast,” said Molly Ashby,
Irvine, Calif. -- KTGY Group, Architecture and Planning, said that Diane's Beachwear will be opening its newest store in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Scottsdale Quarter in early March. The new 1,200-sq.-ft. flagship store represents the 19-store chain's debut outside of California. KTGY is the architect for the new Diane's Beachwear store. Skyline Development and Construction of Norco, Calif., is the general contractor. Diane's Beachwear will join retailers A/X Armani Exchange, west elm, Williams-Sonoma Home, H&M, Nike, Apple and iPic Theaters at the Scottsdale Quarter.
Microsoft is planning to open "dozens" of retail stores, beyond the four that currently exist, the company's COO said recently.
