Walmart, which has developed one of the most sophisticated retail media networks, advanced its advertising strategy on Tuesday to sell more ad space across connected TV (CTV). The retailer announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Vibe.co, a self-serve CTV ad platform that aims to simplify advertising for small and midsized businesses (SMBs). Combining Vibe.co's self-serve CTV platform with Walmart's commerce audiences, closed-loop measurement, and growing media ecosystem, including Vizio, will help more advertisers launch CTV campaigns and better measure their business impact.
Total Retail's Take: Walmart's acquisition of Vibe.co is one of the clearest signals yet that retail media is evolving from a commerce-adjacent business into a full-scale advertising platform business. Walmart and other retailers, including its biggest competitor, Amazon.com, are leveraging their immense datasets to roll out retail media businesses that cater to the brands they sell. And in many cases those media businesses are driving revenues comparable to sales of physical products. Retail media provides a revenue diversification opportunity that Walmart is investing heavily in, its Vibe.co acquisition being the latest example.
Walmart's acquisition of Vibe.co follows its 2024 acquisition of Vizio and significantly expands its ability to serve, target, and measure advertising beyond its own digital properties. Those dual acquisitions will enable Walmart to compete not just with other retailers, but with major advertising and media platforms for a larger share of brands' marketing budgets.
