Blue Apron has partnered with Jet.com for the online meal kit provider to sell its product on Jet.com’s online and mobile platforms. The dinners will initially be available to shoppers in New York City, as well as Jersey City and Hoboken in New Jersey. Shoppers will be able to get Blue Apron's meal kits through same-day or next-day delivery via Jet’s City Grocery offering.
"This exciting launch is another step forward in our channel expansion strategy and reflects the strength of the capabilities we're developing to readily support a variety of opportunities to broaden our access to consumers," Brad Dickerson, Blue Apron's CEO, said in a statement.
Total Retail's Take: Jet.com is hoping to bolster its position in the online grocery space — a fast-growing category — with this partnership. The Blue Apron deal comes on the heels of Jet’s new City Grocery experience, which offers consumers in most of New York City a three-hour scheduled delivery window for groceries, everyday essentials and other select merchandise. For Blue Apron, this partnership offers a potential bright spot in what has been a difficult year. The company's IPO listed at $10 per share after originally hoping to go public between $15 and $17, and its shares currently valued at just $1.14 as of the close of market on Friday. More competition has entered the online grocery space, and Blue Apron is seeking ways to add distribution channels and revenue streams to remain competitive.
