E-commerce and social are yet again collaborating. Instagram is the latest social platform to test out a shoppable element, announcing this week that it will start showing shoppable tags on over 20 retail brands’ posts, including Kate Spade, Warby Parker and JackThreads, to iOS users in the U.S. Retailers can now tag items in their photos, which are hidden behind a “Tap to view products” button. After selecting their product of choice, users see an in-app details page with a specific product’s price, description, additional photos and a “Shop Now” button to buy it.
Total Retail's Take: Yet another example of how, within the next few years, e-commerce and social commerce will no longer be considered separate. Social platforms have been making moves towards commerce for a while now, such as Pinterest's Buyable Pins. Instagram hopes to expand to shoppable posts and videos as well.
